Egg: The dark red-amber oil globule, in this size of egg, distinguishes this egg from all except EIIIB5 (segmented yolk) and KIIIB3. Dense black pigment appears in 3 patches on the embryo, a saddle over the head, a dark double line mid-body, and a paler patch mid-tail. It differs from KIIIB3 in the absence of a big black pigment spot on the snout of the embryo. Incubation is 26-28 hrs.
Larva: The newly hatched larva has a dense black pigment spot mid-body (C & D), which separated it from the early larva of KIIIB3. C & D: NH. Further development has not been recorded.
This egg (and subsequent larva) is very similar to EIIIB5 and KIIIB3, and DNA may prove that they are related species (see notes for those eggs). This curious little egg has not been seen since 2001, and no barcode sequences are available. It may be the egg of Cookeolus japonicus.

No clear spawning pattern is discernible from the sparse collection record (blue graph). The egg was not seen in the DHM samples. The Park Rynie linked samples show 97% dominance of these eggs in the offshore samples, but numbers are too small to be useful.
